There was a time when folks thought Musty was the best American-born 2005 prospect and while thats no longer the case theres still a lot to get excited about. Mazden Leslie, RHD (Vancouver) 4 and has had a tremendous age-adjusted season between his play with Orebro in the SHL and at the world juniors (where he was one of Swedens top forwards despite playing sick), even considering his December 2004 birthday and a year after playing to virtually two points per game at the J20 level (he looked good in an important role as a top-nine centre for Sweden at U18 worlds before an injury kept him out of their medal round run to a gold medal, too). Good luck taking the puck away from him because he can easily move around you with his excellent skating or truck through you with his solid 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame. Scott Wheeler covers the NHL draft and prospects nationally for The Athletic. Perron, who didnt go the popular prep school route in Western Canada, was a terror in Manitobas minor hockey ranks who stepped right into the titanic Steel last season and immediately flashed his skill with the puck, producing 48 points in 63 games to earn USHL All-Rookie Second Team honours. Within his movement patterns, he can handle the puck on a string. The WHL Bantam Draft is only one step in this process. He uses his body to gain inside positioning on defenders and shields pucks effectively. Theres the pinpoint accuracy from impossible angles. Sign up for EP Premium to create your own ranking. Id be quite surprised if he slid all the way to 16 (where I have him ranked), because a right-handed centre with his shot has a ton of value to NHL teams. Priority Draft 10 months ago 44 players were selected by the 22 WHL member Clubs in Wednesday's U.S. forward. And while he played exclusively as a winger in the SHL the last two seasons, Carlsson came up as a centre and I like the way his game might fit there long term because of his combination of size, detail, and awareness. Updated hourly, with analysis, commentary and features from hundreds writers worldwide, our articles are read over 5 million times every month. Welcome to Draft Prospects Hockey's introduction to the 2023 NHL Draft Class series. And while he creates a lot off the rush, he also has the finer skills to play the flank on the power play, create inside the offensive zone, finish from mid-range (hes got a nifty release) and dice up coverage. Ritchie is the complete package. I think hes going to play in the NHL next year and be successful on raw ability from the jump. Charlie Stramel, C, University of Wisconsin (NCAA), 34. Reinbacher had a solid tourney on a bad team despite dealing with an illness the entire time. In order to get away from scouting peewees, the WHL instituted a bantam draft. This draft class marks a decade of me doing this work, and I still believe this 2023 group is rivalled only by 2015 among the talent pools Ive scouted to date. The bantam draft allows for the orderly transfer of players to WHL Protected Player Lists (PPL) from the bantam ranks (13-14 year-olds). Barlows size, strength, and maturity as a teenager lead me to believe he could have a real shot at making the NHL out of training camp for whichever team selects him, hes that talented and reliable. Hes also outscoring most of the WHL for that matter, dominating the opposition when he has possession. Its impossible not to. Elite Prospects - CCHL Bantam Protected Draft 2023. Regardless, it is always impressive to see a draft-year player earning serious minutes in the KHL, especially a defenseman, and Simashev might just have the highest defensive potential in the whole draft. There arent many players in this draft class whove come along quite like Sandin Pellikka has in the last year or so. Not Phil Kessel. Final Thoughts: John Reid Memorial Tournament 2023 Joel Henderson. Manipulation. Carson Bjarnason, G (Brandon) The combination of his skating, shot, and playmaking skills makes him a true offensive weapon. In the 2021-22 season, Gulyayev set a new MHL (the top Russian junior league) record for points by a 16-year-old defenseman with 35 points in 54 games. Ive seen him create breakaways with ease, win races he should, and send defenders sliding when he stops up on them with a head of steam. Noah Dower Nilsson is purely an offensive player at this point, but hes a very skilled one. The way he wheels across the top of the circles and then play-makes from the high slot is special. After no Manitobans were selected in the opening round of the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft, five players from the province were picked in round two. His average SHL TOI is around 4:30, so this should be a confidence boost for the 2023 top prospect. In the J20 Nationell, Stenberg has 20pts (8G, 12A) through 23 games.pic.twitter.com/H36RVcNC4H. Last season, I didnt start viewing the 2022 WHL Draft class closely until after Christmas time and Ive thought about that quite a bit when getting used to viewing this 2023 class of players in comparison. The WHL Bantam Draft is an annual outing, in which the Club's of the Western Hockey League select players who have graduated from bantam. Id like to see him go past effective and really take over more, but he makes his fair share of plays, hes a sub-.500 teams leading scorer, and it does feel like he has middle-six centre written all over him. And while hes probably not going to be a star at the next level, I like Ziemmer as a potential second-line winger who can contribute offensively in a variety of ways. He has also shown a little more fire. His play in transition leaves something to be desired, but once hes in the offensive zone his ability to maintain control of the puck and make smart passes at an efficient rate makes him a consistent threat. 2023 Whl Draft Projected Rankings - Elite Prospects 2023 Whl Draft Projected Rankings Add to Favorites This is a custom user-submitted ranking. The 2021 WHL Prospects Draft Pre-Show begins with co-hosts Chris Wahl and Taylor Rocca at 9:30 a.m. MT, with live draft coverage beginning at 10 a.m. MT. This year, he has already broken past both of those marks and sits top 10 in the WHL in scoring (though he has regressed a little after a hot start). Hes great at changing speeds in transition to separate himself from defenders before either making a move around them or passing to an open teammate. I was eager to see how Matthew Wood would adjust to the college game after dominated the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) where he led the league in goals and points as a 16-year-old. Smith is one of the very best slot passers in the draft and uses his unique puckhandling ability to dodge close-outs, weave off of the wall, and make plays through holes in coverage in possession with ease, regularly hanging onto pucks to delay his way into his spots or carve in. He can slow it down and pick things apart or hurry up his passes through holes. Danielson plays a well-rounded two-way game, is a proficient penalty killer, wants to make a difference in all areas when hes on the ice and blends good overall skill with his effort. Im talking nobody. While this draft is the first opportunity for teams to select bantam players, it is not the last chance for a player to be listed. Everett, by virtue of finishing with the third-best overall record in the 2021-22 regular season, will select 20th overall in the first round. But getting around it consistently enough at higher paces has proven to be a bit of a challenge and his decision-making can look a little slow. Yager is a prospect that I fully expect to still be drafted very early on draft day, I just havent been that impressed with his game this year. He has now impressed me wherever Ive watched him (NCAA, USHL, Five Nations, U18 Worlds, world juniors, etc.) Jesse Nurmi, LW, KooKoo U20 (U20 SM-sarja), 58. There he excelled as the team's number one d-man . Evasive. His size is obviously a talking point, and theres a boom or bust element to his projection, but hes a first-round talent and a clear play creator on a team with a few of them in Chicago this year. Tomas Suchanek, G, Tri-City Americans (WHL), 59. Some scorers tunnel-vision the net and even though the goalie is his focus, theres a lot to his game between the offensive-zone blue line and the shot he takes thats inventive. Theres just this elusiveness to his game where you never know where hes going with the puck. Moores game is defined by his skating (both in straight lines, where he turns defenders with ease out wide, and in quick bursts from explosive stops and starts) and presence on the ice. Ive liked the progress Ive seen in how strong he is over pucks and getting up and under sticks to take them back in pursuit, or go to the net for tips (which hes actually quite dexterous on) instead of always trying to free himself for his shot. Gabriel Perrault looks like someone who could be a power play specialist at the next level with great skill and smarts in the offensive zone. Im not all that worried about either (5-foot-9, 160 pounds) because he has the tenacity and elusiveness that smaller players need to have to make a difference at the NHL level these days. January 2023 WHL Draft Ranking update | Top-80 Joel Henderson. Connor Levis, RW (Kamloops) Though hes currently still nursing a lower-body injury he suffered in early January, before that, it didnt take long watching this years Kelowna Rockets to realize just how much offence he creates for himself and his teammates. Nico Myatovic, LW (Seattle) His head is always up and on a swivel and he does a good job pre-surveying the ice when hes going back to get pucks through frequent shoulder checks. Hes also a dexterous player who has good size (which will fill out). Hell of a performance from Slovakia especially their Tendy! Brindley is a 5-foot-9 forward who has been quite good in the NCAA as an 18-year-old, a very impressive feat. Add in the strength and power that comes with his physically mature frame, an ability to drive and shed contact when he gets bumped, and a defensive conscience, and theres more than just a hands-shot-worker skill set. He has every physical tool you could hope for, and uses each of them well, with the speed, strength, and reach to be a really great top-four defender in the NHL. His skills make him very well suited as a center at the next level with good size, a coveted right-handed shot, good defensive habits (kills penalties quite well), and solid faceoff results. Hes the go-to center for the Cougars in the faceoff circle. 10 Puck Touches: . Denver Barkey, C (London) Adam Gajan, G, Green Bay Gamblers (USHL), 55. Maxim Strbak, RD, Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL), 40. Scouts are fascinated by his power forward package and size down the middle (following a move to centre from the wing as a 16-year-old). Updated: Feb 16/2023 - Welcome to the Top 500 Prospect Rankings List plus Additions/Watch List/Players To Be Evaluated list. Scott Wheeler. (Maksim Konstantinov / SOPA Images / LightRocket via Getty Images), how strong the 2022 draft class was for Slovakia. And after how good he looked as an underager at U18 worlds in Germany last April, nobody has been surprised by his near goal-per-game breakout this season (in fact, I wrote I wont be surprised if he challenges Smith and Moore on the stat sheet this year while providing all of the energy that he does in my preseason ranking). Hes consistent shift-to-shift and game-to-game and while he might lack the dynamism of some of the players in front of him here, he can make plays in a variety of ways on and off the puck and the ice usually tilts in his teams favor when hes out there. He is a special player and looks like he will become a franchise-defining player for whoever selects him, when he finally makes it to North America that is. Logan Cooley, C, U.S. National U18. Oliver Bonk, RD, London Knights (OHL), 48. 2020 All rights reserved to Puck Preps. Without further ado, let's get to the 2023 draft board. But even when things arent going his way and the points arent falling, Ive always liked his involvement level, so its hard to get too down on him. One of the USHLs most talented players, Perron got off to a hot start, was briefly halted by an eight-game December stretch that saw him register justone assist, and has really turned it back on to play his best hockey of late. Sign up for EP Premium to create your own ranking. Hes always moving. His consistent game-to-game impact, whenever Ive sat down to do watch the 2005s at the NTDP on tape, has struck me as well. Stenberg is never the biggest guy on the ice, but hell drop a shoulder and push his way to the dangerous areas of the ice without hesitation. A slow start to the OHL season saw his draft stock swing way down, but his production has leveled up significantly of late, and hes beginning to rise again. Hes gotdecent hands when he pushes through the middle. Hes got really quick side-to-side hands, a hardshot that rattles off of his stick, and quick crossover patterns that allow him to use those hands to get to places where he can look to shoot. A brilliant handler and manipulator of the puck, including at full speed, Smith is a tantalizing and slippery talent who blends deception, baits and fakes (with his eyes, shoulders and head) into his movements to not just make opposing players miss but often send them the wrong way. Im not sure he has the star power of the names in front of him here, but hes got some unique attributes in this class and hes going to make a heck of an NHL player. . Ravndahl spent parts of three seasons with the Prince Albert Mintos program, recording 25 points in 50 games played. Hes got some poise and processing under pressure, even if his play with the puck on his stick isnt dynamic per se. He has produced solid offense so far this year for the USA U-18 team which is made more impressive by the fact that he is usually playing on the second line behind the Smith, Moore, Perreault trio.
